Our New Initiative: Circle of Giving

Our Circles of Giving are named in honor of generous donors whose vision and dedication helped shape the very foundation of Project Amigo. These individuals played a pivotal role in our history, inspiring generations of supporters to join the mission. When you make an unrestricted gift at one of these levels, not only do you become a part of the Circle, but you carry forward their legacy, and you help write our next chapter.

Unrestricted gifts are the most powerful tool in our mission, allowing us to act quickly and strategically to meet the emerging and critical needs that could possibly derail our students from their education.

Catherine Munson, a Founding Board Member of Project Amigo was the driving force behind its legal formation in 1996, and served as Board President. Catherine was a trailblazer, a business owner, and a mom who led by example. She studied microbiology and biochemistry at the University of Nebraska, earning master’s degree in both. Catherine was deeply committed to removing barriers to education for the children served by Project Amigo, especially the obstacles faced by our female Becarias. Her vision and determination were instrumental in the development of Casa Amiga, our university dormitory. Catherine remains a role model and beacon of hope.

Ted Rose, a California businessman, visited the state of Colima in 1984 looking to climb a volcano. He discovered he had taken the wrong bus, which brought him to an Albergue, a place that housed children during the week from surrounding communities that did not have a local school. Meeting these children and learning about the many challenges they faced simply to finish elementary school became a life-changing moment for Ted, a gifted salesperson and businessperson, and it set him on a new path to help the youth of Colima.

Ted’s heart was moved, and in time he and his wife Susan relocated to Colima. Together they led the organization from 1984 to 2013 and became the founders of Project Amigo, laying the strong foundation on which the organization continues to thrive today.

Susan Hill Compassion Circle

  • Attend a Service Week of your choice

Susan Hill, business partner and cofounder of Project Amigo with her husband Ted Rose, was instrumental in determining what the children of Colima truly needed. While Ted’s journey began with the well known bus ride to the Colima volcano, Susan was in Eureka working as the office manager for their business and thinking carefully about how to turn their early volunteer efforts into meaningful change. After helping to host the third Christmas party for the children, she expressed that their role was not simply to give gifts but to teach and to provide the tools and guidance the children needed to succeed on their own.

Susan played a central role in building the organization’s structure and shaping its evolution from doing many different activities to concentrating on helping children learn and continue their education. She remains an unsung hero whose skills, insight, and dedication helped create the strong and effective Project Amigo that exists today.
