What We Do

Project Amigo promotes education as a means to end poverty in Colima. Programs designed to motivate children in poor rural areas to stay in school have the goal of helping them gain the skills they need to leave the world of poverty behind them. Scholarships help push them onward in their quest to build better lives through higher education – all the way to University! We are actively:

...sponsoring kids in junior high and high school

Sponsor a childAfter completing primary school, there’s rarely enough money to continue their kids' schooling. Parents hardly earn enough to survive, and the $4.00(USD) it costs to take the bus to school each week is almost a half day's labor. In addition, there are school uniforms, shoes and school supplies to be purchased. Project Amigo awards scholarships to junior high and high school students who have no other way to keep on walking on that path out of poverty. Scholarships pay their school registration fees and transportation to school; buy their uniforms and shoes and school supplies; and provide them a hot meal every day. You can help students continue to weave the marvelous tapestry that IS their brighter future.

...sponsoring kids in college

Remember heading off to college? What an experience and likely an enormous period in your professional growth! You can help us achieve something that was impossible in these children's lives not too long ago. Our students have gone on to become lawyers, public servants and countless other professions with your help. Be sure to see our boarding home, Casa Amiga!

...improving literacy

Reading with kidsThanks to Project Amigo, thousands of children each year experience the fun and joy of reading. Teachers report noticeable changes in children's vocabularies and knowledge as well is in their attitudes toward learning and their creativity. How? With support from the Colima area Rotary Clubs collaborating with Rotary Clubs and Districts in the US, Canada and Australia, we deliver bookshelves of books to schools in the states of Colima and southern Jalisco. We also regularly supplement the libraries with new titles. Volunteers come for a full week of work several times a year to help us sort, box and deliver books to these impoverished schools. It is one of the most enjoyable ways to see these children progress in life! Interested in helping out? Learn how children can benefit from your help...

...offering dental service

Dentistry for those who cannot afford it otherwiseProject Amigo carries out dental screening and treatment not otherwise available to the children. Volunteer dentists examine thousands of little mouths each year, and treat those who need attention. Youth groups play a role in preventive dental health programs by visiting rural schools, teaching children to brush properly, and applying fluoride to help strengthen teeth against decay. We have our own dental clinic in town, complete with two dental chairs, professional tools and supplies. If you are a dentist, we'd be honored to have you serve these children!

...providing vision care

Examining eye patientsA cadre of professional and lay people runs a vision campaign each year where 1,250 needy adults and children are examined and provided the glasses they need to improve their vision. Glasses are donated to the program and volunteers help our experts sort glasses and examine patients. It is truly heartwarming to see someone able to focus and see properly for the first time! Learn how you can become a vision week volunteer.

...helping people hear

Examining hearing patientsProject Amigo collaborates with Colima area Rotary clubs to distribute hearing aids to needy adults and children. Hearing aids are provided by private donations and sometimes are provided by funds from matching grants between US Rotary clubs, their districts, and The Rotary Foundation.
