Work Week Schedule

Each winter volunteers come to Colima to work, meet the children, visit with Mexican Rotarians, and learn more about the people and culture of western Mexico. Work can include electrical and plumbing repairs, distribution of fun children's books to poor rural schools, interacting with junior high and high school scholarship recipients at their homework clubs, or reading and playing with children who need some extra attention.

Literacy Work Weeks

Saturday, March 13 - Sunday, March 21, 2010
Saturday, November 6 - Sunday, November 14, 2010
Sunday, March 13 - Sunday, March 20, 2011

Participants will have the opportunity to provide meaningful hands-on service through the preparation and distribution of mini-libraries and books of one's own destined for children in poor rural schools. Local Rotarians will work alongside our team members to attach bookplates and to assign approximately 160 fun children's books to each mini-library. The books of one's own will be sorted by grade-group for distribution on this and other work weeks during the winter season.

Distribution of the mini-libraries and books of one's own will include members from local Rotary clubs, and will give participants the chance to see remote rural villages. Participants on the 2006 Literacy Work Week felt it was one of the most rewarding volunteer experiences they had ever had.

The libraries and books of one's own are being provided by a matching grant co-sponsored by multiple Rotary clubs, Districts and The Rotary Foundation.

Christmas Fiesta Week

Saturday, December 4 - Sunday, December 12. 2010

Every year Project Amigo and the Colima Rotary Club host a Christmas party for around 250 children.

During the week before the party, volunteers shop, sort, wrap, and label gifts of clothing, shoes, and toys, then distribute them to the children who live in four different locations.

The climax of the week is the fiesta itself during which volunteers serve food, play with the children, and bring Christmas joy to hundreds of disadvantaged children. The week is planned to help visitors enjoy the Festival of the Virgin of Guadalupe on December 12.

Please note: Reserve your spot for next year as soon as possible. This work week experience is very popular.

Vision Work Week

Saturday, January 8 - Sunday, January 16, 2011

Optometrists and lay people will enjoy this opportunity to screen poor children and adults for correctable vision problems. More than 1,000 patients will receive the glasses they need. You will have the opportunity to work in several towns and villages.

Interact Work Week

Sunday, February 19 - Sunday, February 27, 2011

The Interact Youth Work Week gives young people the opportunity provide hands-on service and make friends with students in Colima, Mexico. The week focuses on preventive dental health programs (teaching children how to brush their teeth properly; applying topical fluoride in some areas where tooth decay and tooth loss is prevalent in the population; and distributing books in poor rural schools. Interact youth will work with Project Amigo’s scholars and the Colima Rotary Club to take 200 children on the annual outing to Colima’s Sea Turtle Preserve. Interact groups must provide one adult chaperone per five students.
