Sponsoring Scholars

A Sponsorship is a way in which you, a donor, can establish a relationship with a poor Mexican student that can deepen and expand over the years as that young person advances through junior high, high school and college.

As a Scholarship Sponsor you will receive a photo of and biographical information about your student and progress reports throughout the school year. If you visit Colima, we will arrange for you to meet your sponsored student.

A minimum donation of $420 for junior high, $600 for high school and $4,000 for a college student is requested to provide a scholarship for a school year.

Project Amigo Scholarship Recipients who earn a grade point average of 9.0 or above (out of 10) are treated to pizza and the movies. These incentives are paid for through donations to Project Amigo's Scholarship Fund.

"I want to study because I believe that these days a person who is not prepared to confront the changing world with appropriate tools such as ones acquired by studying, has less chance of succeeding." Moises Honorato Alvarez, Scholarship Recipient

About Being a Sponsor to a Student

When you choose to sponsor a young student, he or she benefits from your sponsorship, and we hope you will also. Here are answers to some questions often asked by Sponsors; if you have further questions, please write or e-mail us at inquiry@projectamigo.org and we will be glad to reply.

Can I write to my sponsored student?

Please do. We encourage you to send cards and letters to your young scholar. You may write in English and we will be glad to deliver and translate the letters. We will also translate and send to you via surface mail your child's replies. Please mail all letters for your child to our Novato address. Allow six weeks for a reply.

Can I send gifts?

No. The best gift you can give your student is your encouragement shown through your letters. Do not send packages to your student using our Novato address. These packages must be forwarded to Mexico and the customs duty which Project Amigo must pay usually exceeds the value of the gift. Also, do not send packages to Project Amigo in Mexico or directly to the student. The Mexican postal system is not reliable and they will likely not arrive. Never send cash or checks to your child.

Can I send e-mails?

Yes. E-mails are received in our Mexican offices. They will be printed out, delivered to and translated for your student. The students do not always have access to e-mail themselves, and if not you can expect a reply via surface mail.

Can I visit my sponsored student?

Yes! If you would like to meet the student you sponsored, please let us know in advance of your visit. The students are very excited to meet their sponsors and you will enjoy a special relationship with your amigo that is extremely rewarding. We are always glad to arrange for you to visit with your sponsored scholar.
