Literacy Work Week

Saturday, November 14 -
Sunday, November 22, 2009

Participants will have the opportunity to provide meaningful hands-on service through the preparation and distribution of mini-libraries and books of one's own destined for children in poor rural schools.  Local Rotarians will work alongside our team members to attach bookplates and to assign approximately 160 fun children's books to each mini-library.   The books of one's own will be sorted by grade-group for distribution on this and other work weeks during the winter season.
Distribution of the mini-libraries and books of one's own will include members from local Rotary clubs, and will give participants the chance to see remote rural villages.  Participants on the 2006 Literacy Work Week felt it was one of the most rewarding volunteer experiences they had ever had.
The libraries and books of one's own are being provided by a matching grant co-sponsored by multiple Rotary clubs, Districts and The Rotary Foundation.

Literacy Team

PDG Bill Mickelberry (D5110) coordinates the matching grant and leads the work week team.

Volunteer Reading

Volunteer Margie Antrim from Juneau Gastineau Rotary shares a "good read" with her new friend.

Students performing

Children at the rural schools often show their appreciation to the visitors by performing special dances or reading special poems created for the occasion.

Christmas Fiesta Week 2009

Saturday, December 5 -
Sunday, December 13, 2009

Every year Project Amigo and the Colima Rotary Club host a Christmas party for around 250 children.
During the week before the party, volunteers shop, sort, wrap, and label gifts of clothing, shoes, and toys, then distribute them to the children who live in four different locations.
The climax of the week is the fiesta itself during which volunteers serve food, play with the children, and bring Christmas joy to hundreds of disadvantaged children. The week is planned to help visitors enjoy the Festival of the Virgin of Guadalupe on December 12.

Please note:  Reserve your spot for next year as soon as possible. This work week experience is very popular.

Pinata

Fiesta attendees of all ages get to try to break the many piñatas.

Fiesta dinner

A work week volunteer from British Columbia serves the traditional fiesta dish pozole to students from the Quesería migrant camp.

Project Amigo is no longer just about making a fun party happen -- but, rather, is about making higher education available to children who want to make a difference in their families' history and destiny.  The Christmas Fiesta is one of several incentive programs designed to keep children enrolled in school.  Those who do well and want to continue on to junior high, high school and college can -- with help from Project Amigo's sponsors who help fund their scholarships.

Volunteer Reading

Volunteers help children discover the fun and joy of sharing a book together. Besides stimulating their interest in reading, these times together make both the visitors and the children feel good about themselves.

The comfortable accommodations, the comradery with my fellow volunteers, the excellent care and support of the staff and the obvious improvements in the lives of the children and families are just a few of the things that have left an indelible imprint in my mind.

Volunteer from Alberta, Canada

Volunteers play Soccer

Work Week Volunteer Jim Hage from Fairbanks, Alaska, found out that there is always time for a pick-up game of soccer.

Each work day volunteers choose between several work crews doing a variety of jobs ranging from heavy to light, for all levels of ability. Work may include heavy construction, plumbing or electrical repairs to children's facilities, painting walls or murals, art projects or reading with children, giving haircuts, or simply playing with children who need some extra hugs.
